Kelly: Metaphor of Technology

Descripción de la animación:

If I was to suggest a metaphor for thinking about technology that I've covered in this book, is this idea of thinking of them as children. So there are mind children, there are children of our mind and every technology that we created is basically a child that we produced. And our job as parents is two things: to train that technology for the long-term. To train it to be a good citizen. To train it to be helpful to other technologies. To be helpful for people. To in some ways continue to transmit value over time.
And the second thing is, is it's our job to try and find the right set of friends and the right job and the right role for that technology. And it may take many tries and constant interaction with that, and constant re-bending and tweaking and moving it around until we find a really good job for that idea. So we have an idea… it needs to… every idea needs to be placed in the ecology of other ideas and we have to find the right ecology. Because sometimes the idea in the wrong set will produce things that are not optimal for everybody.
So we are kind of parents of technology and we should think of them as our children. None of them will go extinct, they will never come back, we don't want to abandon them. We want to constantly engage them and train them for the future.
