Domscheit-Berg: Shift in privacy

Descripción de la animación:

I hope that for the future we will redefine privacy into something that is not as weak as it is today. You see, there's this very bad development in society that people feel that if someone tells them 'I want privacy’, that they say, I don’t have to hide anything, I'm not a criminal or whatever. So there's this very bad feeling that’s come up in the majority of the population that if you have something to hide, if there's something you want to keep private, that's almost a shady thing, that's almost as if you have something bad to hide. I think that's not true. You should always have an interest and you should have the right to have control over your own data. And about what other people do with that data that they have on you. And that is what I hope the future will be focused more on than it is today in the present, which is educated people that understand the impacts of technology and that understand that they shouldn't share everything with everyone, and they shouldn't let the state monitor everything that the state claims they have to monitor for terrorism prevention or paedophilia or whatever, all these excuses that we see all day long. They're just shallow excuses. The bad part is that unfortunately humans only learn most efficiently when it hurts. And it’s bad that in this case it seems like the invasion of our privacy will have to hurt us really badly first, before we learn the value of that privacy and then conquer it back. It would be much easier if we would understand it in the process of it happening and could stop it before it turns out into the worst possible thing.
